I read this recommendation by Christy Lee-Engel (thanks so much!) on the OSLIST.

Along with what Michael H wrote yesterday ("Perhaps a bit of conflict in the definition, as it seems to say that listening isn't active participation.") this makes me think of a favorite passage from Shaun McNiff's book "Trust The Process: An Artist's Guide to Letting Go" (with my emphasis added):

"...keep in mind that people move and act 'freely' when they are allowed to do so according to their personal sense of timing. Some take longer to feel comfortable. Never push and force expression in others or yourself. Learn how to wait with a belief that every person will become involved when the time is right. Invite expression but don't judge people who may be warming-up or preparing themselves on the sidelines. Trust that something significant is always moving inside them."

www.keepturningleft.co.uk for more bird films. The starlings are an astonishing thing to see - Near Oxford - England. This was filmed at an RSPB reserve called Otmoor. It is the most remarkable thing I have ever seen - and as a video camerman I have seen some pretty amazing things.

Like drivers on a freeway, starlings dont appear to mind having neighbors nearby on their sides—or above and below, for that matter—as long as they have open space ahead. That makes sense, since the presence of a clear path in the direction of travel minimizes the likelihood of collisions should the birds need to shift their course abruptly, as is likely when a falcon attacks. But whats really nifty about this spatial asymmetry is that the researchers have been able to use it to calculate the number of neighbors to which each starling pays close attention—a quantified elaboration of Pottss chorus line idea. By looking at correlations between the movements of neighboring starlings, they can show that each bird always pays attention to the same number of neighbors, whether they´re closer or farther away. How many neighbors is that? Six or seven, says Cavagna, who points out that starlings in flocks can almost always see many more nearby birds— but the number may be closely tied to birds cognitive ability.

The direction of the flock can be coordinated by each birds tracking six or seven other birds. Remarkable. This is a very different kind of cognitive skill.

A powerful, poetic, visual and introspective journey into the heart of an astonishingly symbolic environmental tragedy. On one of the remotest islands on our planet, tens of thousands of baby albatrosses lie dead on the ground, their bodies filled with plastic from the Pacific Garbage Patch. Returning to the island over several years, our team is witnessing the cycles of life and death of these birds as a multi-layered metaphor for our times. With photographer Chris Jordan as our guide, we walk through the fire of horror and grief, facing the immensity of this tragedy—and our own complicity—head on. And in this process, we find an unexpected route to a transformational experience of beauty, acceptance, and understanding.

We frame our story in the vividly gorgeous language of state-of-the-art high-definition digital cinematography, surrounded by millions of live birds in one of the world’s most beautiful natural sanctuaries. Vocalist and improviser Will Hewett explores the language of sound beneath words. After singing 15 minutes every day for a year, Will Hewett describes--and sings--what he learned about commitment and the ability of a simple creative practice to open us to vibrancy, and to a deeper connection with ourselves and the world around us.

Some extracts:

My whole concept of time turned inside out This practice became like a generational center of my day. It was like a fire, hoooooo, that the rest of the day gathered around.

Listen to the singing world around me and find my part on it. Something it was like if the world was singing so fully that there was nothing from me to add. 

I sang whatever showed up. Most times sounds in made up languages.

I got to travel every day into the world beneath words: the world of colour, of life, of vibration, of motion, a world that has no borders, no countries, and for me it feels like swimming. And I think we all know this world. I think our bodies are experiencing it all the time, they´re experiencing it right now. We just tend to cover it up with a layer of words, ideas,.thoughts about who we are or who we should be. But words are really flemsy messengers for the fullness of the experience. And singing can bring us here.

So my simple hope is that we´ll just sing more, that we´ll sing our way into the world of our bodies and the body  of our world. That feels more important than ever.

You can start it´s easy. You can just start humming...

Time bows to authentic commitment and it stretches to accommodate it.
